Parisian rapper PLK's Un grand garçon becomes one of France's top-selling albums
Among the rap-dominated list of France's best-selling albums in the first half of 2026, one name stands out above established stars like Gims, Bad Bunny and Theodora: PLK, a 29-year-old Parisian rapper whose stage name derives from 'Polak', a reference to his Polish heritage.
PLK's latest album, Un grand garçon, released on March 13, 2026, has sold 197,000 copies in just three months, establishing him as one of French rap's new superstars. The album's commercial success was immediate, achieving 4.78 million streams in its first 24 hours on Spotify and selling 82,552 copies in its first week. Across his career, PLK has sold nearly 2 million albums total, making him one of the biggest-selling French rappers of the past decade.
This commercial dominance reflects broader trends in the French music market, where domestic artists account for approximately 77-80% of top album sales. French rap in particular has become a cultural juggernaut, with nine of the ten albums certified Diamond (500,000 copies) in recent years being rap albums produced in France.
Heritage and backstory
PLK's backstory and heritage, frequently referenced in his clever, accessible rhymes, add depth to his artistic identity. His Polish paternal grandfather fled to France at age four during the Second World War to escape Nazi persecution. Born Mathieu Pruski, PLK grew up in Paris's 14th arrondissement before being raised primarily by his paternal grandmother in Clamart, in the Hauts-de-Seine department.
His Corsican roots run equally deep. His mother, originally from Ajaccio, Corsica, introduced him to rap at a young age, playing him tracks by Notorious B.I.G. This early exposure sparked a passion that led the young Pruski to begin writing lyrics at age nine.
Professional journey
PLK's professional journey began with Panama Bende, a seven-member Parisian rap collective formed in 2012. The group released two projects together: the EP Bende Mafia in 2016 and the album ADN in 2017. In June 2017, PLK launched his solo career by signing with Panenka Music, a label founded by Fonky Flav of the rap group 1995.
Despite his massive commercial success, PLK remains remarkably elusive. The rapper is known for being notably media-shy, having given only one interview in five years—to YouTuber HugoDécrypte. This reticence may explain why his name remains unfamiliar to many outside France's rap community, even as his albums top the charts.
PLK's ascent culminated in two sold-out performances at the Stade de France on September 4 and 5, a milestone achievement that places him among France's most successful musical acts. For an artist who lets his music speak louder than any interview ever could, the numbers tell the story: Un grand garçon has confirmed PLK as a defining voice in contemporary French rap.
