Storms set to hit France this weekend as heatwave eases
France is preparing for widespread storms this weekend as the country's fourth heatwave of the summer finally begins to recede, offering some relief from temperatures that reached 40°C across western, central and southern regions on Thursday.
Météo-France confirmed Thursday marked the peak of the current heat episode, which follows previous heatwaves in May, June, and July. The forecaster said cooler air would arrive from the west on Friday before spreading across the country by Sunday, though the temperature decline will be gradual.
Storm activity intensifies
Thunderstorms are expected to develop over mountainous areas on Friday, particularly in the Alps and Massif Central. Storm alerts cover a wide band from the Loire Valley through central and southwestern France, including the Western Pyrenees, parts of the Rhône Valley, Alps, Provence, the Mediterranean coast, and Corsica.
The weather pattern will shift significantly on Saturday as cooler Atlantic air collides with the warm, humid conditions left by the heatwave. This atmospheric instability is expected to trigger thunderstorms across southern France, especially in the southwest and around the Garonne valley. Some storms could bring hail, powerful wind gusts, and intense localised rainfall.
Sunday's forecast indicates an increased storm risk, with showers and thunderstorms potentially affecting large portions of France, particularly from the southwest towards the centre and northeast. Weather forecasters have urged caution for those travelling during the August 15 Assumption Day holiday weekend, a major Catholic celebration that falls on Saturday this year.
While temperatures will become more comfortable in the west and north, the Mediterranean coast and Corsica will continue to experience high temperatures with less storm activity.
Slow temperature decline
Despite the incoming storms, the end of the heatwave will not be abrupt. La Chaîne Météo warned that the temperature fall would be slow across the country, with France potentially remaining in heatwave conditions until the middle of next week.
The forecaster predicted a significant change for the second half of August, with cooler Atlantic weather arriving next week. The period from August 24 to 30 could become very unsettled, with heavy rain and thunderstorms possible, though this longer-range forecast remains uncertain.
Persistent drought concerns
The weekend's rain will provide only limited relief from France's severe drought situation. As of early August, 67 of France's 101 departments were under maximum crisis-level water restrictions, with nearly 70 percent of the country facing water-use limitations.
Météo-France reported that the lack of significant rainfall combined with exceptional heat has caused soil dryness to worsen since June. July 2026 was the country's hottest month on record and the third driest July for rainfall, following months of heatwaves that set new temperature records and sparked large wildfires.
Minister for Ecological Transition Monique Barbut noted that severe drought conditions appeared around a month earlier than usual this year, despite spring rainfall levels being generally within the normal range.
By late July, drought conditions were widespread across mainland France and Corsica. While this weekend's storms may provide temporary relief in some areas, the country's broader water shortage will continue to be a pressing issue as France navigates what has become an exceptional summer for extreme weather.
