Recruitment and retention remain statewide concerns

The listings come amid broader workforce shortages in Montana. In two reports released January 7, 2026, the Montana Department of Labor & Industry identified staffing shortages as one of the greatest threats to healthcare access. The publications were the Health Careers: Montana 406 JOBS Sector Analysis and the Status of the Nursing Workforce in Montana.

The department said the state was preparing to use up to $1.2 billion from the Rural Health Transformation Program over five years to support recruitment, training and retention. It described the funding as the nation's fourth-largest rural health investment.

The University of Montana's 2024–2025 Montana Healthcare Workforce Report, released September 16, 2025, put statewide healthcare employment at more than 70,000 people, or about 13% of all workers. It estimated the sector's annual economic contribution at $7.1 billion.

That report recorded an average of 1,726 healthcare job postings a month statewide. Registered nurses accounted for the largest demand, at 1,128 monthly postings. It also found that rural and frontier counties continued to lose healthcare workers to urban centers, including Missoula and Yellowstone counties.

Average RN earnings in Montana were $81,364, versus $93,247 nationally, according to the university report. The report attributed the state's below-national wages to recruitment and retention challenges.

The state's nursing workforce report found that 23% of Montana RNs in 2024 intended to leave the profession within five years, down from 26% in 2022. The national figure was nearly 40%. The department's release also reported that 21% of licensed practical nurses had left the healthcare workforce for reasons other than retirement or were working outside healthcare.

Havre hospital expansion targets 2028 completion

Separately, Northern Montana Health Care, which operates Northern Montana Hospital in Havre, began construction in March 2026 on an operating-room and intensive-care expansion. The organization announced the groundbreaking on April 20, 2026.

Plans combine about 31,000 square feet of new construction with 18,000 square feet of renovated space, bringing the project's total to nearly 50,000 square feet. The expansion includes four robot-assisted operating rooms, two endoscopy suites, an on-site pharmacy and a modernized ICU.

Construction is expected to last about two and a half years, with the full project anticipated to be complete in 2028.
