Two hotels become one
French businessman and philanthropist Frédéric Jousset backed the project, which brought Le Choiseul and Le Manoir des Minimes together through an extensive renovation. The resulting hotel has joined The Leading Hotels of the World network.
Markets of Tomorrow and Sleeper Magazine place the opening in late September 2026, with Markets of Tomorrow's project record giving September 24 as the completion date. The property includes 22 suites among its 63 accommodations. Spanish outlet Merca2 describes it as Amboise's only five-star hotel.
The site lies in Amboise's historic center beside the Loire, below the Château Royal d'Amboise. Its buildings span several centuries and are listed in the inventory of historical monuments: the former Minimes convent dates to the 15th century, the Maison de l'Apothicaire to the 16th and the Maison du Duc to the 18th. Galleries cut into the limestone also form part of the complex.
LBBA handled the architecture, while Fabien Roque of Roque Intérieurs designed the interiors and Joséphine Fossey oversaw artistic direction. In April 2025, La Nouvelle République reported that Marugal's management had put the renovation budget at roughly 20 million euros.
Restaurants, rock-carved suites and an opening exhibition
Dining centers on Le Choiseul, where Michelin-starred chef Nicolas Aubry works with executive chef Vincent Léger Blanchard. Guests can also visit Le Turner Bar on the rooftop, overlooking both the Loire and the château.
The property's limestone spaces house Le Spa des Roches, created with Clarins and myBlend. The wellness area is carved into tuffeau limestone, and its facilities include a heated outdoor pool, sauna, cold bath, sensory shower, steam room and a yoga platform facing the Loire. Four of the hotel's suites are also carved directly into the rock.
Les Greniers de César provides space for exhibitions and events. For the opening, the hotel is hosting a major site-specific exhibition by Bernar Venet, conceived as a carte blanche project with the Château du Clos Lucé and the Royal Château of Amboise.
Expansion in France and across Europe
Amboise follows two earlier French openings for Marugal. The company entered the country in 2018 by taking on management of Le Relais de Chambord, beside its namesake château, then added Château des Fleurs in Paris in 2025.
Marugal describes its approach as choosing distinctive projects and managing them in ways that preserve each hotel's character while creating value for its owners. Founder and CEO Pablo Carrington has said the company does not set growth targets purely in numbers, "but rather to incorporate projects in which we are convinced that we can add value to the owner and develop a truly differentiated hotel proposal."
That approach sits within a broader European expansion plan. In July 2025, Europa Press reported that Marugal managed 14 hotels: 10 in Spain, one in Portugal, two in France and one in Switzerland. At that time, the company planned three additions over the following two years, which would take the portfolio to 17.
Europa Press also reported combined revenue of 131 million euros for the 2024 financial year, a 16% increase from the previous year. Revenue per available room, or RevPAR, rose 8% during the same period.
Beyond Le Relais d'Amboise, Marugal's French pipeline for 2026 included Île Seguin, according to Merca2. The planned hotel in Boulogne-Billancourt, on the outskirts of Paris, comprises 230 rooms and suites overlooking the Seine.
